We want this time to accompany us to a place full of legends and mysteries we've all read or heard something by now. The people "cursed" by Ochate as they wanted to qualify some ... A place of reference for all who are interested in the world of intrigue and the paranormal.
For some time one of our goals was certainly visit this town where reality and fiction seem to merge to envelop us in a truly disturbing. We wanted to check in first person if in fact all that had been written on this point accurately reflect the events or on the contrary, we found ourselves once again facing one of these places marked by the legends, myths and speculation on interest "some, "we wanted to ultimately have scrupulously us to live there.
Located 18km from Vitoria, we begin our journey to Ochate. The site (belonging to the ancient County of Treviño) is surrounded by small villages of great beauty, rich history and culture, (San Vicentejo Iríruri just 4 km or just over 3 km are a good example of this) steeped in an ancient village where it is easy to blow up the imagination to relive old battles or encounters with legendary creatures. Accompanied by the silence is sometimes broken by the sound of the wind or the bleating of sheep, we decided to start our adventure in one of these towns (San Vicentejo) to take breath and tackle well, the best possible way we have go, aware of the steepness of the terrain where only the moors and a small stream seem to dominate everything ...
Not dwell too much on history as we Ochate commenting because it is well known to all, alleged UFO sightings, epidemics ravaged the population several times, tragic deaths of unknown origin ... the list of mishaps and failed events can be summarized as follows. The very name is a mystery Ochate and as you can see from this brief review, many meanings that are attributed to him have sought throughout history:
Goate (top gate) in Euskera (Puerta del Frio)
Otxate (Puerta de Lobos)
Ochate or Oñate (The Gate of Gog), biblical character of the Revelation of St. John.
It also appears in other documents under the name Chochat (1257), Ochaita (XVII) or by document grille San Millán (1025) and Gogate, which they say was set in the Rigo district d 'IVITA and taxed at the monastery gate Emilianense 1.
We began our work
Day One:
As is our custom to avoid unwanted surprises, try to start our field work with the light of day, but our cultural walk through the beautiful city of Vitoria, captivating and full of exciting stories, team preparation and of course, the discovery of the impressive church of the Immaculate Conception in San Vicentejo finally make well into the night not get to the point where we thought we begin our journey to Ochate. However, despite the darkness seems to wrap it all up, that does not stop us, we are here and not leave without trying to reach us tonight ...
In light of our lanterns and the faint glow of a solitary streetlamp façade anchored in one of the many uninhabited houses in San Vicentejo, we lay our equipment back and we have to walk down a narrow stone path whose destination certainly know. We have lost perspective, night clothes and the mountains but went ahead without losing the trail, shined in the distance trying to locate the only reference point we know with absolute precision guided us to our ultimate goal ... "The Tower of Ochate."
After just over 2 km of travel we could not find any trace of the mysterious watchtower, the distance we've come makes us doubt by now that we're still on track and after traveling a few yards we found our error .. . We have reached the end of the road, a metal gate preventing us from continuing and realizing that this time we failed, we return to the starting point. However, our tour of this path has not been in vain, and that further use to better estimate the distance and direction of our steps and thereby hit our next route. Returned the next day to find the right path, but certainly not that night we would leave San Vicentejo and his beautiful chapel without making prior to a series of tests whose results Parafonista, as we have witnessed in the
previous report
were really shocking and revealing.
We Ochate
Second Day:
The next day, with the clarity and revealing ways, we return to our goal. This time everything is much easier and shortly starting our journey we spotted the famous "Tower-lighthouse" of Ochate. Once you have found this point, we decided nevertheless to make time for that way to reach our goal the fall of dusk. After the break and as with all our equipment ready, we start the ascent, are 19:00 and we have approximately four miles to go before we reach the village, our view is set at this time in a distant gray structure that seems watch us from afar ... it is, of course, the enigmatic Burgond Hermitage, which seems to give us also his "special" and silent welcome. Our enthusiasm is at maximum and also our nervousness, months of waiting seems to finally are going to be rewarded ... Finally, after passing a final lift in the way we met, this time if, with the imposing figure of the mythical Tower of Ochate.
We finally arrived, but a huge cliff and a stream appear between us and our goal, again the nerves emerge and begin to feel really sorry. If night falls, it will be impossible to find a way to get us there. Finally, one last try, we risk jumping a fence to be found in one side of the embankment. After advancing a few hundred feet along the slope with great emotion found a "lucky" atajuelo seems just down the ravine toward the creek ... Going forward with great excitement, knowing that the end cross the "gate of wolves", after advancing a few yards, we found that right through this way we can finally access to the ruins and we were suddenly transfixed at the sight of that we are at the very foot of the Torre de San Miguel Archangel, 702 meters high, overlooking the plain was built around 1240 and whose white stone was used, for clarity, as "lighthouse" to guide pedestrians and carriages roamed the region for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, today there is nothing all that, not a single trace of its former splendor, the graffiti and dirt seem to occupy this beautiful building and now all we passed the ruins today are deep feelings of sadness, abandonment and desolation ...
